Donald Trump Was For American Flag Burning Before He Was POTUS And NFL Protests, Here's Proof
Donald Trump Was For American Flag Burning Before His Election As POTUS And NFL Protest, Here's Proof As this is written, President Donald Trump has waged what the mainstream media describes as a 'culture war' against those who would protest against the National Anthem at NFL games, most notably NFL players. Trump has attacked NFL players to such a harsh degree that, last Friday, at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama, he referred to pro football athletes involved in taking a knee during the playing of the anthem as “sons of bitches”: his exact words. Those who consider themselves patriots started to verbally, and on social media, attack NFL players who were protesting not the flag in itself, but the horrible treatment and murder of black men and boys by police officers – in effect under the color of American law. Players like Colin Kaepernick and their supporters have reminded us that freedom of expression is part of what made America. To this point, you would think Donald Trump disagrees with them. A number of people, generally white and politically conservative, use Trump's words and name and say that the NFL players should not go against the President. Again, as if the President really disagrees with freedom of expression. Well, folks, here is proof that President Donald Trump is using and manipulating a group of Americans. On January 8th 2015, Trump was on David Letterman for an interview. In the many video copies of this full exchange, at about the 8:17 mark, Letterman goes into asking Trump what he thought about the attack on the staff of Charlie Hebdo Magazine in Paris. Trump said it was awful and then Letterman went into a rant about how American freedom of expression is in actions like, and he specifically said this, flag burning! Trump nodded his head in agreement and said “he's right” - and took no time to argue with or reject what Letterman was saying. In fact, Trump continued to nod in approval and then said “He's on fire, tonight.” President Trump is tricking and manipulating people in an effort to divide America and take our gaze off of the many problems his Administration has. It's time to stop being played for a fool, folks. Time to wake up.

Oakland Knows Of Other Illegal Warehouses After Ghost Ship Fire But Where's Plan To Help?
Oakland Knows Of Other Illegal Warehouses After Ghost Ship Fire But Where's Plan To Help? The tragic Oakland Ghost Ship Fire that took 36 lives on December 2nd of 2016 remains a bad memory in part because the City of Oakland taken little action in making sure such an event doesn't happen again. This blogger contacted Oakland Assistant City Administrator Greg Minor on September 14th 2017, and this was his response to my question: Hi Mr. Abraham, The special event permit redesign survey did not include a question regarding the specific venue(s) associated with the survey respondents in order to protect the anonymity of the survey respondents, many of whom have expressed concern about either being displaced from their place of residence/assembly or having the venue shut down. In turn, this anonymity should maximize the amount of information the City receives from those currently holding unpermitted events. In terms of the task force composition, it only includes staff members but has and will benefit from the expertise of those involved in the entertainment community. For example, the task force conducted a listening session with a focus group of event holders earlier this year, met with the sf entertainment commission director, is currently reaching out to the public via the survey, and will circle back with the entertainment community as it moves forward with implementing the suggestions put forth by the public. Best, Greg What stood out to me was this part of the email: “The special event permit redesign survey did not include a question regarding the specific venue(s) associated with the survey respondents in order to protect the anonymity of the survey respondents, many of whom have expressed concern about either being displaced from their place of residence/assembly or having the venue shut down.' Wow. That means the City of Oakland does know the location and owners of other warehouses that may be serving as homes for Oaklanders that are out of complaince with City of Oakland Codes, and yet has not announced a program to help them. What the City of Oakland has done is create the “Special Event Permit Survey Design Task Force” which consists of “Greg Minor and Nancy Marcus in the City’s Administrator’s Office, Kelley Kahn in the Mayor’s Office, Jim MacIlvaine in the Cultural Affairs Office, Sgt. Andy McNeil in the Oakland Police Department, Assistant Fire Marshall Cesar Avila in the Oakland Fire Department, Tim Low in Building Services and Aubrey Rose in the Planning Department, (and) has identified several barriers that discourage compliance, as well as strategies to combat these obstacles.” - according to its website. I discussed in more detail what it does in my first post on this, but the issue of what the City of Oakland is doing to help owners brings their buildings up to code (which includes a line-item budget expenditure that does not currently exist), has not been answered. I sent Mr. Minor this email to follow up: Greetings Mr. Minor, I am following up on my initial email, as I did vlog about the task force. Is there a timetable for the completion of the task of the survey? What about the formation of policy based on that? Also, have you considered a program of code enforcement assistance with those venues you know of that are 'out of compliance' with regulations? Thank you, Zennie Abraham To date, I've not received any response to it. Stay tuned.

Oakland-Alameda County Official Says NFL Raiders Want Coliseum Lease Extension To “2019, Maybe 2020”
Oakland-Alameda County Official Says Raiders Want Lease Extension To “2019, Maybe 2020” Ah, it's so hard to keep a secret, eh? The current Oakland-Alameda Countty Coliseum Joint Powers Authority Executive Director Scott McKibben first told one publication on Monday, September 26th, what I reported on September 6th: that the Raiders were seeking a lease extension to, as I was told “2019 and maybe 2020”. The mainstream media elected to ignore the story because it came from me. But the fact is, several of my friends happen to be Oakland and Alameda County Officials. We seek each other out and about and talk – and so there you go. I have an advantage that the Las Vegas media types lack, and on top of that, my background is in urban planning and I worked for the City of Oakland. So, here's the truth: the Oakland Raiders are having a ton of problems in trying to build a new, state of the art stadium in Las Vegas. The first problem is the Raiders lack the money: the original plan was for Sheldon Adelson and Las Vegas Sands to pay for such things as highway upgrades and additions that would be called for by the Southeern Nevada Tourism and Investment Act – and cost overruns. On September 8th 2016, Mr. Robert Goldstein, the Cheif Operating Officer of Las Vegas Sands said to the SNTIC that they would pay for all cost overruns and operating losses. But when Sheldon Adelson departed from working with Raiders Owner Mark Davis and team President Marc Badain, in Februrary of this year, that monetary cushion was taken away. The media, who doesn't try to get how this works, mistakenly reported that, first, Goldman Sachs, and then Bank of America, could “replace” was the word used, a man in Sheldon Adelson worth north of $30 billion. But then reality set in: Bank of America sports banker Elliot McCabbe came to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority to state that it would only loan $850 million, and not at all help cover cost overrums. Right now, and because of the laws in Clark County and in the SNTIA, the Raiders are already looking at a price tag of an additional $650 million, and that does not include the $370 million relocation fee – all in addition to the $1.9 billion estimated but not confirmed price tag. That's $2.550 billion – and we have to now consider President Trump's comment that the private – public partnership for funding of federal highway improvements is off the table, and states and local governments would be expected to foot the bill. That places more pressure on the Oakland Raiders, who, by SNTIA law, are already asked to pay for an “adequate” amount of the cost of what are called “off-site transportation infrastructure costs,” in addition to Clark County's own parking rules, which call for 14,000 spaces, and at a total cost of $200 million, considering they have to purchase land to make the parking areas, and the land is at $2.9 million per acre, as of now. All that, and the simple fact that the Oakland Raiders target of a 2020 opening was not based on the reality presented by the difficulty of building a stadium on that specific Russell Road site, but the fantasy of wanting to have a new stadium open for the NFL's 100th Season, led the team to ask for a lease extension to 2019 or 2020 at the Oakland Coliseum. But there's a new wrinkle, even then: the Oakland A's are leaving the Coliseum and thus, the NFL could have that land – all they have to do is ask the JPA. And who's to say they're not interested? Stay tuned.

Twitter Ups 140 To 280 Character Limit, Goes From Micro Blog To Mini Blog
Twitter Ups 140 To 280 Character Limit, Goes From Micro Blog To Mini Blog When Pownce and Twitter were created in 2006 and 2007, respectively, the platforms ushered in the area of “micro-blogging”, or sharing a view or thought using a few characters, in that case 140 of them. The popularity of both Pownce and Twitter pushed the method of sharing thoughts in just 140 characters into the mainstream. When Pownce was shut down after it's sale to Six Apart by its founder Leah Culver (who was also part of Owen Thomas' drinking club at the old Moose's bar and restaurant in San Francisco), it gave the small but growing field of social media to Twitter for the taking. And that happened just as the idea of putting ideas into 140 characters too hold. (It must be noted that it's easy to make a PhP-based Twitter-style platform, and a firm called Iden.ti.ca allowed you to do just that before it was shut down three years ago.) So, the act of tweeting (rather than 'Powncing') was born. And with that came events like Jeff Pulver's annual “140 Conference” in New York. Person upon person, from Gary Vanuchuck to MC Hammer became evangelists of this new form of communication. Whole consulting firms have grown around the idea of tweeting – and that, in turn, has always been considered as communicating in 140 characters. And that act was called 'micro-blogging'. And now, after 10 years of tweeting, Twitter changes the game and ups the character limit by double, or to 280 characters. Think about it: 140 gives way to 280. What does it mean? Well, it means we no longer do 'micro-blogging' but mini-blogging. And it means that Twitter itself is taking aim at Facebook, which has no comparable limits in it's system. But what will the 280 allow? Well, more content, more text, and more expression of ideas. It will result in more news delivered on the Twitter account, and cause it to behave a lot like a cross between a blog and Facebook. It will not put Wordpress out of business, but may permit a more complete presentation of blog-based content in Twitter. One thing it will cause is more content engagement. What puzzles me is why the Twitter management didn't free up part of that 280 character space for ads? Stay tuned.

Is Oakland Special Event Permit Redesign Task Force Protecting Next Warehouse Fire Location?
In the wake of the tragic Oakland Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire that took 36 lives on December 2, 2016, The City of Oakland has still not taken any meaningful action to make sure that such an event does not occur again, save for one policy change: allowing Oakland Police Officers to tell the City about unpermitted events. This effort is also part of a survey that's under way and established by an inner-City-of-Oakland group called the Special Event Permit Redesign Task Force. Don't worry if you've not been informed about it as an Oakland resident; only City of Oakland staffers sit on it, and that's a bad idea. The Special Event Permit Redesign Task Force includes "Greg Minor and Nancy Marcus in the City's Administrator's Office, Kelley Kahn in the Mayor's Office, Jim MacIlvaine in the Cultural Affairs Office, Sgt. Andy McNeil in the Oakland Police Department, Assistant Fire Marshall Cesar Avila in the Oakland Fire Department, Tim Low in Building Services and Aubrey Rose in the Planning Department, (and) has identified several barriers that discourage compliance, as well as strategies to combat these obstacles." But on the survey page the task force does not explain what those "several barriers that discourage compliance, as well as strategies to combat these obstacles" are. The problem is what we in planning used to call "Analysis Paralysis" - or "the state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome." For example, the survey has been in existence for several months now, and no release of information from it has happened. Moreover, the survey itself lacks a way to determine the location of any venue that may be the focus of the response. There's a reason for this, if wrongheaded. Greg Minor, in The City's Administrator's Office, said in an email to me that... "The special event permit redesign survey did not include a question regarding the specific venue(s) associated with the survey respondents in order to protect the anonymity of the survey respondents, many of whom have expressed concern about either being displaced from their place of residence/assembly or having the venue shut down. Given that today is now September 23rd, 2017, and that email was just sent to me on September 14th, and the Warehouse Fire happened on December 2nd, there has been plenty of time to do that, and to take more meaningful action. Like what? If I were to put on my economic development hat, I would call a real estate broker who specializes in warehouse development and go around the City with that person, making an inventory of warehouses - used and not used. I got this idea from a project I worked on as an intern in the Oakland Office of Economic Development. In 1987, it was my job to find a way to relocate pipes owned by East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD). My boss, Oakland Assistant City Manager Ezra Rapport, did not give me a road-map to use - he expected me, the Berkeley City Planning grad, to come up with the method myself. So I did. I found a site, and went about the task of relocating the pipes, stopped only by EBMUB, who's property manager had no idea Ezra put me up to the task. But if I can do that, then, 30 years later, what the hell is going on with the City of Oakland that it does not have staff members who take effective action? Rather than just posting a survey online, the task force should be expanded to include Oakland event producers like my friend Lionel Bea, and actually make a list of places that events have been held or could be held, and determine what's right and wrong with them via a combination of site visits, phone calls, emails, and information provided by organizations that have held (for example) art gallery tours. Then, draft a resolution for the Oakland City Council, and then get to work selling the plan to the City Council. And on the matter of Mr. Minor's concern about protecting “ the anonymity of the survey respondents, many of whom have expressed concern about either being displaced from their place of residence/assembly or having the venue shut down” - work can and should be done to identify and to help brings those persons and places into code compliance. That's what good economic development and planning work does. Stay tuned.

Some People Use The Word Mansplaining In A Way That's Sexist And Cliche
Some People Use The Word Mansplaining In A Way That's Sexist And Cliche Ok, so the social media topic was Star Trek: Discovery, where Sonequa Martin-Green played a starring role as First Officer Michael Burnham. The African American actress rightfully gained applause for her role in that position. But then came a number of tweets which seemed to imply that there had never been a black woman in space on television before. So, this fan of the original 1966 Star Trek Television series took to Twitter to issue a gentle reminder to Black Girl Nerds, the media organization who's content I love and mission is long overdue, that Sonequa Martin-Green was, by far, not the first sister in space. Of course, that title goes to the very awesome Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura on Star Trek, and not just for the original series, but also for all of the movies, save for J.J. Abrams remake, where her character was represented by Zoe Saldana. Rather than push aside or forget Ms. Nichols, she should be revered as “the first,” and not forgotten. So, I point this out via Twitter and someone I don't know or will name chimes in accusing me of “mansplaining”. The definition of “mansplaining” is, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “at its core, a very specific thing. It's what occurs when a man talks condescendingly to someone (especially a woman) about something he has incomplete knowledge of, with the mistaken assumption that he knows more about it than the person he's talking to does.” In my case, and as I pointed out on Twitter, I'm a fan of the original 1966 Star Trek Television series, and so I was taking up for Ms. Nichols. Guess what? I could have been a woman and done the exact same thing. In fact, I received a number of retweets and likes for my tweet coming to remind all of what Nichelle Nichols did. Then, there was one sister who comes up and accuses me of “mansplaining” - and as one who tires of clichés, that one sent me to the moon. It's overused. You have women and men telling men that they're mansplaining something, but it only takes a little thought to realize that their complaint, or attack, is sexist in itself. Part of this process of the mis-use of mansplaining is due to social media itself. There's such a rush to judge others via the medium that the persons who do it don't even stop for one moment to think about the appropriateness of their claim. So intent are they are scoring what I call “insult points”, that all logic goes out of the window. What results is an effort that's sexist. Just because the person appears to be a man (on social media, you don't always know), the responder slaps the mansplaining word, and thinks they scored insult points, and made themselves look like the cool, hip defender of whatever act they think is being put on women. In other words, all the effort to make themselves feel good by putting the other person down. Well, word up: I wasn't putting down Black Girl Nerds at all – just giving a friendly shout out for Nichelle Nichols. Just because I'm a guy doesn't mean a knee jerk response like mansplaining has to be the order of the day. Moreover, mansplaining, or what the blogger Rebecca Solnit described in her essay called “Men Explain Things to Me”, can just as easily be called “youngsplaining”, where a younger person talks to an older person as if the older person is out of touch with current life. Or, it can be called “whitesplaining”, where a white person, a man or woman, talks down to someone generally black or 'of color' because they don't think the person of color can possibly understand or know something about a practice (like, say, golf), that's commonly the province of someone white. (Or “blacksplaining” in the case where the person's black – just take “white” out of “whitesplaining” and replace it with “black” and you get “blacksplaining”. Whatever the case - mansplaining, or youngsplaining or whitesplaining or whateversplaining – the act is done to talk down to the person on the other end of the 'splaining, and is wrong. But in our zeal to right a wrong should not mean that being sexist (in the case of mansplaining), is OK. It should not mean that being ageist against young people is a good counter. And it should not mean that being racist against someone white is the right way to go, because it's not. You know the best thing to do? It's to stop having a categorization for every behavior we may perceive we don't like from someone. If we as a society were far less neuotic, we would not be havings these problems in communication, anyway. Stay tuned.

NFL To Inspect Estadio Azteca Quake Damage Before Raiders vs Patriots Game Decision
NFL To Inspect Estadio Azteca Quake Damage Before Raiders vs Patriots Game Decision The National Football League will inspect the Estadio Azteca Stadium, site of the New England Patriots versus Oakland Raiders game November 19th, before making a determination on the fate of the planned contest after the giant 7.4 Mexico City earthquake, today. NFL Public Relations Representative Brian McCarthy wrote this to me: "We need to first inspect the stadium. Not going off twitter reports. That one photo shows an extension joint; it's not a crack. Stadium had four of them." And for clarity, Mr. McCarthy means four extension (or "expansion") joints in the stadium. Even if the NFL elects to move the game, the question is will the venue that the game's moved to be, indeed, the Oakland Coliseum? Raiders fans expect this to be the case because the Silver and Black are the home team. But there are scheduling considerations to be made in this case. Looking at an internet search, the answer appears to be that the Coliseum is available. I also contacted Oakland Coliseum Joint Powers Authority Executive Director Scott McKibben. He said that if the NFL asked to use the Coliseum "we would do all we can to make it happen." Stay tuned.
